Guiding Every Move Towards Success
Building a Strong Chess Community
The Thoothukudi District Chess Association (TDCA) was established in 1986, following the bifurcation of Thoothukudi District from Tirunelveli. From its inception, the Association demonstrated a progressive vision by organizing open chess tournaments that attracted players from across regions, thereby fostering competitive spirit and widening the district’s chess horizons.
In 1998, a significant milestone was achieved when these open tournaments were elevated to FIDE-rated status, marking Thoothukudi’s emergence on the international chess map. This transformation was made possible with the generous support of SPIC, which served as a principal sponsor.
From 2007 onwards, Teekay Chess Centre assumed a pivotal role in nurturing chess at the grassroots level. Through sustained efforts such as promoting chess in schools, conducting free summer coaching camps and organizing numerous district and state-level tournaments—even in smaller towns—the Centre has played an instrumental role in democratizing access to the game.
Building upon this foundation, Teekay Chess Centre ventured into organizing International Open FIDE-rated tournaments from 2013 onwards, successfully conducting four such prestigious events, further enhancing the district’s reputation in the global chess community.
A towering figure behind the success and growth of TDCA and Teekay Chess Centre is Shri Manuel Aaron, an illustrious son of Thoothukudi District. An International Master of exceptional repute, he dominated Indian chess from 1959 to 1981, securing the National Championship title nine times and earning the distinguished Arjuna Award. TDCA takes immense pride in having him as its Patron.
Guided by his vision to produce International Masters (IMs) and Grandmasters (GMs) from Thoothukudi, the Thoothukudi Chess Trust was established in 2016. The Trust is committed to nurturing talent and incentivizing excellence by awarding ₹2 lakhs to players who achieve IM or WIM titles and ₹50,000 to their coaches in recognition of their invaluable contribution.
TDCA’s journey has been shaped by the dedicated service of its former Secretaries and office bearers. Currently, the Association is led by President Mr. G. P. Joe Prakash and Secretary Dr. T. Karpagavalli. Under their stewardship, TDCA has reached new heights, expanding its activities across all eight taluks of the district and engaging a growing community of players, arbiters, coaches, sponsors and organizers.
Since 2018, TDCA has significantly accelerated its initiatives, organizing district and state-level tournaments, state championships, FIDE-rated events, arbiter examinations and coaching camps with remarkable efficiency—hosting approximately 35 to 45 events annually.
